Panel to take part in FERC case on El Paso transmission hike

The Nevada Public Utilities Commission on Tuesday voted to participate in a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission case in which El Paso Corp. is seeking to raise natural gas transmission rates by $80.7 million.

The effect on Las Vegas-based Southwest Gas Corp. is expected to be about $3 million, which would raise monthly rates for the average residential customer by about 36 cents, according to a briefing memo prepared by PUC attorneys.

Also on Tuesday, the commission delayed a decision on efforts to devise a criteria for measuring the quality of service provided by Nevada Power Co. of Las Vegas and its sister utility, Sierra Pacific Power Co. of Reno. The commission will eventually use the criteria to assess the recovery of costs related to the utilities' 1999 merger.
