Board to spend $7.1 million on land near Convention Center

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority on Tuesday agreed to spend $7.1 million to buy 1.42 acres on Sierra Vista Drive, south of the Las Vegas Convention Center's South Hall near the Renaissance Hotel.

The property is expected to provide additional circulation to the South Hall and could provide as many as 300 new parking spaces. In the long term, it could be used for future expansion, board officials said.

The LVCVA also welcomed new board members and extended the terms of several existing members.

Getting new two-year terms were Mesquite Mayor Bill Nicholes and, from the private sector, Kara Kelley, president and chief executive of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and Glenn Christenson, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Station Casinos Inc. Given two-year extensions to existing appointments were Las Vegas Councilman Larry Brown, Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson, North Las Vegas Mayor Mike Montandon, Boulder City Councilman Mike Pacini, Harrah's Entertainment Inc. executive Tom Jenkin and MGM Grand Resorts Executive Vice President Chuck Bowling, who was appointed last month to fill a vacancy.
