Letter: Small fixes for Social Security

WEEKEND EDITION

January 29 - 30, 2005

During a press conference last week, President Bush responded to questions about his plan or vision for Social Security reform. It was immediately apparent by his response that President Bush has downgraded Social Security's future shortfall from a "crisis" to simply a problem. He also indicated that he is willing to look at alternatives other than raising the payroll tax.

Those of us who take the time to read and understand this issue believe there are many simple options, including a small increase in payroll taxes, that will solve this problem for the next 75 years.

President Bush says he wants to fix the Social Security problem for future generations, then he ignores the near-term crisis in Medicare and Medicaid.

Does President Bush have a viable plan for America, or is his vision just a mirage?
