Teen shot after allegedly pulling knife on officer

A 16-year-old boy is recovering at University Medical Center after he was shot in the arm by a Metro Police officer this morning in the area of Washington Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard.

Officers were called to a home in the 1200 block of Nugget Creek Drive around 12:45 a.m. to investigate a report of domestic violence between a mother and son, Capt. Jim Dillon said.

When police arrived, the boy ran from the home, jumped a fence and landed in an apartment complex at 6666 W. Washington Ave., then kept running.

The officers told investigators that the boy abruptly stopped, turned to confront them and pulled out a knife, Dillon said.

An officer fired once, hitting the teen in the arm. He suffered a non-life-threatening injury.

His name has not been released because of his age. When he is released he will be charged as a juvenile for domestic violence and resisting arrest with a weapon.

The officer who shot him has been with Metro for three years. He was placed on paid leave while the department's use-of-force board investigates the shooting. The officer's name will be released 48 hours after the shooting.

This is the second officer-involved shooting this year. On Jan. 4, Jeffrey Allan Gaddis was shot and killed after stealing some CDs from a store, leading police on a chase, then pointing a gun at officers, who opened fire.
