Software maker names executive VP new president

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Adobe Systems Inc. named Shantanu Narayen to the newly created positions of president and chief operating officer, in a move the company said wil free Chief Executive Bruce Chizen to focus on longer-term growth strategies.

In a news release today, the software maker, whose Acrobat reader dominates its field, said Narayen, 41, is responsible for the company's "day-to-day" operations, including engineering, marketing and sales of Adobe software.

Narayen had served as executive vice president of worldwide products since 2001. He joined Adobe in 1998.
