Letter: Wasteful SUVs are reason we’re fighting oil war

WEEKEND EDITION

January 8 - 9, 2005

It seems like every day I see or read articles on how sport utility vehicles and trucks are gaining more popularity because of their increased size and power. Let's face it, though. How many people really require a truck or SUV that weighs upward to 10,000 pounds and guzzles gas at alarming rates.

The articles I read about our troops lacking properly armored vehicles is pathetic. Maybe we could do a little sacrificing on the homefront, like we did during World War II. That is, cut back on the unnecessary, oversized domestic vehicles, using the extra metal for military vehicles, which so urgently need it.

Obviously, lighter domestic vehicles would consume less gas. This would cut back on our dependence on foreign oil, which is probably the biggest reason we are in the Middle East conflict today.
