Mesquite to seek flood funds
Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005 | 11:03 a.m.
Mesquite city officials told state legislators today that they likely will ask for some of the state's budget surplus to help with the damage done to the city in floods earlier this year.
The city is working with Logan and Overton, two other areas affected by the floods, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to determine the total damage that the floods caused, said city lobbyist Randall Robison. Mesquite should have a specific request for the state in a few weeks, he said.
One tragedy of the flood is that many homes were outside of designated flood plains and the homeowners did not have flood insurance, said Mesquite Mayor Pro-Tem David Bennett. More than 80 homes were damaged by the floods, including at least 30 homes with structural or interior damage, according to the city.
"It was a pretty devastating, pretty unforseen event," he said.
Assemblyman David Parks, D-Las Vegas, chairman of the Assembly Government Affairs Committee, said he would look for the request for help.
