Letter: National health care system is the answer

Regarding William Moreland's Nov. 30 letter, in which he wrote that he didn't think government was capable of creating a viable health care system:

Legislation for a national health care system (House Resolution 676) was introduced on Feb. 4, 2003, by Rep. John Conyers, a Democrat from Detroit. But the proposal was poorly covered by the media due to the beating of the war drums for the war in Iraq.

The legislation includes all medical services as well as prescription drugs for all Americans based on the Medicare distribution system. It would be paid for by existing federal, state and local revenues that currently pay for Medicare, a modest payroll tax, a health tax on the richest 5 percent of Americans, a minimal tax on stock and bond transactions and a repeal of the Bush tax cuts.

The legislation would cost the average American nothing and would severely limit the need for outsourcing by America's businesses, which means more and better jobs for Americans.

Every other industrialized country in the world has a national health care system. It's time America admits our system is wrong -- because only the medical insurance and pharmaceutical companies profit -- and must be replaced.

To accomplish this, do not vote for any member of Congress who will not support a national health care system. Help make this the top issue for the congressional elections in 2006. Your vote counts. Use it wisely and you will benefit from it.
