Tark was not freeloader

Regarding Rob Miech's story about the last time Jerry Tarkanian paid for a meal in Las Vegas ("Tark still holding court," Nov. 25):

In 1987 I had a restaurant, Mazzio's, across from UNLV, and Tark and an entourage came in several times a week. He was classy and never asked for a comp. Once in a while, I would pick up a check. But he never asked and would come in at night with family and friends and spend some money.

On the other hand, (former UNLV President Robert) Maxson, who was responsible for Tark leaving the university, would have his secretary call to make reservations and ask, "Is it complimentary?" I picked up his tab many, many times, until one day it dawned on me that he never came in at night or ever bought anything.

Thanks for the great story on Tark.

Warm reception in Alaska

Thanks to Rob Miech for the nice article about the Las Vegas Wranglers coming to Anchorage ("A journey worth making," Nov. 16). It is nice to see someone have positive things to say about our hometown and how much (coach Glen Gulutzan) enjoys his trips up North. We reciprocated in April when more than 150 of us came down to Las Vegas."

UNLV basketball needs more support

I enjoyed reading about the Rebels and Hawaii (basketball) games ("Aloha, Hawaii fans," Nov. 21). I'm a new fan to Rebels basketball ... I'm amazed at the low attendance (and) feel we need to back a hometown team, no matter their record.

I hear the community only supports winners. These young men are winners.

Memories of old Major League parks

I enjoyed Ron Kantowski's great article on Kansas City Municipal Stadium ("A sad sight for anyone who appreciates baseball history," Nov. 21).

It was how I felt when I stood at the wall that was not torn down from old Forbes Field in Pittsburgh were Babe Ruth hit his last home run and Bill Mazeroski hit the homer to win the 1960 World Series.
