Pedestrian dies after being hit by SUV out of crosswalk

A 46-year-old man was killed Monday night when he apparently stepped into the path of a 2002 Dodge Durango at Flamingo Boulevard and Decatur Boulevard, Metro Police said.

Police said it appears the man did not use a crosswalk and was at fault.

Witnesses told police that the man, identified as Samuel Aguilar of Las Vegas, stepped off a sidewalk north and east of the intersection as the Dodge was going westbound on Flamingo in the right turn lane.

Detective Dennis Magill, of Metro Traffic's Fatal Detail, said Aguilar was about 180 feet from the intersection when he darted out in front of the driver of the SUV.

"He didn't give (the driver) a chance to stop," he said.

Although the SUV driver, Debra Peterson, 46, of Las Vegas, tried to stop, the front of the Dodge struck the man.

Aguilar was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries but died Monday night from his injuries, police said.
