Crashes leave 1 dead, 2 hurt

Metro Police investigated separate crashes Sunday that killed one pedestrian and left another in extremely critical condition.

A crash Sunday night involving three cars critically injured a 53-year-old man who police said was jaywalking as he tried to cross Vegas Drive near Simmons Street in the northwest valley.

Police who arrived about 8:40 p.m. in the 2600 block of Vegas Drive found a man pinned under a 1993 Plymouth Voyager, Metro Sgt. Tracy McDonald said.

The man was trying to cross the street outside of a crosswalk from the south side of Vegas Drive, McDonald said. The man was struck by a 1988 Toyota and the impact caused the pedestrian to spin into the path of the Plymouth, he said.

The Plymouth dragged the man about 70 feet, where heavy rescue crews had to lift the van off him. Paramedics then took him to University Medical Center, McDonald said.

McDonald said the driver of the Plymouth said he thought he hit debris in the road and not a man.

A 1988 Pontiac struck the rear of the Toyota, McDonald said.

No one else involved in the crash was injured, McDonald said. There was no evidence of alcohol or drugs on the part of any of the drivers, he said.

"They all are extremely upset," McDonald said.

Earlier Sunday a 35-year-old Las Vegas pedestrian was killed on Owens Avenue at B Street, police said.

The woman who was killed, identified by the Clark County Coroner's office as Annette Suzanne Burton, was crossing B Street when a 2005 Honda traveling east on Owens failed to make a curve onto B Street, police said.

The driver of the Honda, 26-year-old Michael Barone, was cited for not maintaining a travel lane, police said.

About 3 a.m. Sunday a driver was taken to the hospital in critical condition after a collision at Desert Inn Road and Eastern Avenue between a 1997 Chevrolet Lumina and a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am.

The driver of the Chevrolet was listed in critical condition at Sunrise Hospital, police said. Name and age of the driver was not released.

The Pontiac driver, 56-year-old Alberto Castillo of Bolingbrook, Ill., had minor injuries, police said.

Both vehicles arrived in the intersection at the same time. The color of the traffic light at the time of the crash is unknown. The crash is still under investigation.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 of Detective Dennis Magill at 229-3317.
