Editorial: Dangerous intersections

WEEKEND EDITION

August 20-21, 2005

The life of a 3-year-old girl was suddenly ended Tuesday night as the result of an accident at Losee Road and the northern beltway in North Las Vegas. Another seven people were injured. The accident happened when the driver of a Ford Expedition on Losee entered the beltway, apparently without heeding a stop sign, and was hit by a Dodge Caravan carrying the girl.

Even though this area has been growing rapidly, contributing to a surge in traffic, stop signs are still being used at the intersection because the beltway is being built in stages. Stoplights have been planned for the intersection for some time, and are scheduled to be operating there by January.

In the meantime, Clark County officials have been depending upon drivers to be aware and cautious. In our view, this is too much to ask. Drivers are not always cautious and they make mistakes. We believe intersections, especially at the unfinished beltway, should not be left that vulnerable. At the western and southern legs of the beltway, after several accidents, flashing lights were installed in advance of stoplights and accidents have been greatly reduced. They should be installed in advance of every beltway intersection.
