NLV Police get program grant

North Las Vegas Police have been awarded a $286,439 federal grant to set up a program to combat domestic violence, officials said.

The grant, awarded July 28 by the Justice Department, will help police and the non-profit victim service providers Safe Nest, Shade Tree and the Rape Crisis Center increase services for domestic violence victims, officials said.

It will also allow the police department to hire a detective dedicated to domestic violence cases, officials said.

Web page focuses on Test Site

The National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office has launched a redesigned Internet Web site to help the public find information about the Nevada Test Site and activities there. The test site is located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

The new Web site has six main sections, including national security, environmental programs, the Nevada Test Site, library, "about NSO" and Kids Zone.

The new site is located at http://www.nv.doe.gov.

Ethics panel hires new legal counsel

The state Ethics Commission on Wednesday hired attorney Kristin Luis as its new legal counsel.

Luis, a senior deputy district attorney in the Carson City for 5 1/2 years, will earn $85,000. She replaces Nancy Lee Varnum who resigned in May.

Stacy Jennings, executive director of the commission, said having a person with prosecution experience will be helpful to prepare and handle cases.
