7-Eleven to have stricter ID policy

To reduce minors' access to tobacco products, 7-Eleven has agreed to check the identification of anyone purchasing tobacco if the person appears to be under the age of 27, Attorney General Brian Sandoval said Thursday.

State law prohibits the sale of tobacco products to those under 18. The enforcement program focuses on retailers with poor records of selling these products to those who are underage.

Other retailers that have already agreed to check identification include Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Rite Aid.

Sandoval said Nevada's 197 7-Eleven stores will also prohibit self-service displays of tobacco products, tobacco vending machines, distribution of free samples and the sale of cigarette look-alike products and smoking paraphernalia to minors.

The retailer is also expected to hire an independent entity to conduct random compliance checks and restrict in-store advertising of tobacco products.

"This agreement is an important public health win, particularly for our youth," Sandoval said.
