Fishing report: Too hot, too windy for most

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

LAKE MEAD: High temperatures, strong winds and severe thunderstorms the past week have all combined to curtail fishing activity, with very few anglers reported along the shoreline from Pumphouse Cove to Horsepower Cove. Shad have not been seen on the surface or along the shoreline recently in the Boulder Basin, which has contributed to the poor striper fishing.

Boaters who have been fishing at night or in the early morning hours have reported fair fishing for striper in the vicinity of Boxcar and Crawdad coves.

Fair action continues for largemouth and smallmouth bass in coves near Echo Bay Marina. One angler said that he had fair luck over the weekend for smallmouth bass at Fire Cove.

LAKE MOHAVE: Poor weather conditions are also the story on this Colorado River reservoir. Quite a few anglers have tried their luck over the last week with few fish caught to show for it. Heat, wind and monsoon storms seemed to have kept the fish from biting.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: The unusually hot temperatures have subsided during the past week. Daytime highs have dropped to the high 90s, with nighttime lows in the 60s.

Trout fishing has slowed to fair as the surface temps of area reservoirs have risen to 76-78 degrees. However, with trout tapering off, largemouth bass fishing has picked up with fish in the 14- to 15-inch range the norm and the occasional 3- to 4-pound fish being caught.

Weeds are becoming a problem in some parts of the reservoirs as is usual as the summer wears on.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Thunderstorms have swept the area recently and taken with them the 100-plus temperatures of the previous week.

Trout fishing is fair, with PowerBait catching most of the fish.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Fishing for white crappie and largemouth bass remains fair to good. Jigs, crankbaits and rubber worms are catching the fish. Trout fishing remains fair, with PowerBait, worms and flies being the bait of choice.
