More funding set aside for traffic improvement

A Regional Transportation Commission subcommittee on Thursday approved a roughly $3.3 million increase to funds earmarked for the agency's long-term traffic improvement plan.
The matter, which came before the RTC's executive advisory committee, more than doubles the allocation to the Traffic Capacity Improvement Program, raising its budget from $2 million to $5.3 million for Southern Nevada.
According to the RTC, the program was a continuation of a Clark County bond issue that passed in 1987 and was approved by the RTC in 1992. The agency typically sets aside funds from fuel taxes to Clark County, the cities of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson based on population and assessed needs.
The money has been set aside to help the RTC keep pace with road improvements to accommodate growth in the Las Vegas Valley.
Of the $5.3 million allocated, roads in the unincorporated county will receive the largest share, almost $2.5 million. Las Vegas is expected to receive $1.58 million, more than the $1.2 million combined set aside for North Las Vegas and Henderson.
The matter was approved by the RTC's Operations Subcommittee in late March.
