Teacher, Nellis win EPA honors

Nellis Air Force Base and a Silverado High School teacher shared honors from the Environmental Protection Agency last week. EPA's regional administrator Wayne Nastri presented awards to the base and teacher Thursday and to 35 other companies, groups and individuals across the West for their efforts to protect and preserve the environment during 2004.

"The EPA applauds the outstanding achievements of these environmental heroes," said Nastri. "Thanks to their efforts, our air, water and land will be cleaner and safer for generations to come."

Last year, Nellis saved more than $815,000 by recycling old materials, including fuel and old plastics. By recycling more than 8,000 gallons of fuel, Nellis saved $32,000 in hazardous waste disposal costs.

The EPA also honored Don Curry, a teacher at Silverado High School, for teaching students about global environmental issues. Curry's students produced a video to teach others about environmental issues such as air pollution and invasive weed control.
