Letter: Earth’s treasures must be guarded
Friday, April 22, 2005 | 9:26 a.m.
This weekend Las Vegas will be celebrating Earth Day with events in Summerlin and at Spring Mountain Ranch. As we enjoy the food and festivities, we should also consider the importance of preserving some of our wide open lands for future generations to enjoy. Earth Day reminds us that we must be good stewards of the land so that we can leave a natural legacy to those who come after us.
Our wild lands, both forests and deserts, can't be created again, but they can still be protected. These areas provide clean air and water, habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal life, and needed escapes from the hectic city life. They are rich in cultural and historical artifacts and are part of the way of life for many ranchers and rural citizens.
What better way to observe Earth Day than by urging our elected representatives to guard the environment? The effort we put into protecting our Earth will be appreciated by future generations.
