Fishing report: Stripers and cats stand up to winds

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

LAKE MEAD: Despite strong afternoon winds, anglers have enjoyed fairly good action recently for striped bass and channel catfish in the Boulder Basin and Overton Arm.

Large threadfin shad are being found in the Las Vegas Wash and are being netted by anglers for use as bait. Boaters are using the shad and anchovies to catch small stripers in the Vegas Wash Arm.

Boaters are also catching stripers and catfish by the tires at Lake Mead Marina. Shore anglers are having some luck for stripers near the new boat launch ramp at Las Vegas Wash.

Fishing was fairly good over the weekend for boaters who were fishing behind Fish Island in the Overton Arm.

Fishing is reported to be good for catfish above Overton Beach Marina.

LAKE MOHAVE: Mike Burrell, NDOW biologist, said he caught and released numerous striped bass in nets last week while conducting fish surveys from Cottonwood Cove to Willow Beach. The fish were all healthy and ranged from 5 ounces to 4 pounds. The highest concentration of stripers was just north of Cottonwood Cove.

WAYNE E. KIRCH MANAGEMENT AREA: Dan Maes, installation technician, said that good weather moved through the area with temperatures reaching the low 70s; however, fishing success has been sporadic.

Anglers fishing all three reservoirs did have some success for rainbow trout with a few 14- to 16-inch fish taken, but most were 11-inch recent stockers. Maes said that the larger trout are going through their spawning cycle, and to expect them to become more active in two to three weeks.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: According to Pete Gill from Nevada State Parks, fishing has been fair to good. The water is a little murky from the snow melt runoff, but anglers are still catching recently stocked rainbow trout. PowerBait and live worms appear to be the bait of choice.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: More anglers are fishing the reservoir with a few stocker size rainbow trout being taken. Powerbait and live worms are taking the fish. The reservoir water level is at full capacity and the water is a little murky.

URBAN PONDS: Channel catfish that weigh as much as 3 pounds have been caught recently with night crawlers at Floyd Lamb State Park and Sunset Park. Rainbow trout are being taken at the parks with night crawlers and flies. Bluegill and largemouth bass are becoming active at the park ponds.
