Locals participate in exercise

More than 60 adults and cadets from four Southern Nevada Civil Air Patrol squadrons were involved in a three-day exercise dubbed "Desert Shark" that tested the Nevada Wing's response to fly and photograph.

The exercise from Friday until Sunday was monitored by the U.S. Air Force, which gave an overall grade of excellent to the air squadrons during last year's exercise.

The crews flew over land and lakes during the exercise. Friday the air crews took digital photographs of land. Pontoon boats floating on Lake Mead were photographed on Saturday. Fourteen planes flew from North Las Vegas Airport over Lake Mead, while another six in Northern Nevada flew over Lake Tahoe.

The Civil Air Patrol performs 95 percent of U.S. inland search and rescue missions under the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counterdrug missions at the request of federal, state or local agencies.
