Sun’s Accent section earns national honors

For the third consecutive year the Las Vegas Sun's Accent section has been honored in the Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards contest. The Accent section placed second nationally in the General Excellence category; it also placed second in 2002 and 2003.
The Sun was honored in the Class II category, which is for newspapers with a circulation of between 25,001 and 50,000 subscribers. Placing first was the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press and placing third was the Herald News of West Paterson, N.J.
The Sun submitted Accent sections from five dates in 2003.
Other General Excellence place-winners were the Los Angeles Times; Newsday; The Seattle Times; the Miami New Times; the Fort Worth Star-Telegram; the Cleveland Scene; The Pitch of Kansas City, Mo.; the News & Record of Greensboro, N.C.; and the Litchfield County Times of New Milford, Conn.
The Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards contest, formerly known as the Penney Missouri awards, is 44 years old and is sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia. It is the oldest feature writing and editing competition in American newspapering.
Contest rules state that entries must exhibit "excellent writing, interesting approach and valuable subject matter." Judges reviewed nearly 1,400 entries in 15 categories for the 2004 awards.
