Henderson rejects development

Residents of a rural Henderson neighborhood won their fight against a proposed residential development Tuesday night when the City Council unanimously rejected development plans for property near the intersection of Lake Mead Parkway and Athens Avenue.
KB Home was asking for changes to zoning and land use plans to allow construction of 81 single-family homes on 17 acres that are zoned for commercial use.
Six residents asked the council to deny the request, saying they feared the residential development would create traffic problems, ruin the rural nature of their community and set a precedent for higher density development around them.
"Please preserve our neighborhoods and do not approve this zoning change," Holly Fic asked the council.
Resident Gary Allison told the council that the neighbors compromised years ago when they went along with a plan for commercial development for that property and said if the request were approved, "We would be looking at a high density development before we're through."
The mayor and council members said they, too, were opposed to the proposed development.
