Redford to be at Rainbow Library

Robert Redford will join the parade of national figures who have campaigned in Nevada this year, making an appearance Wednesday at the Rainbow Library.

Redford, the actor and director who has lobbied for environmental causes, will appear in behalf of the Environmental Accountability Fund, a project of the National Resources Defense Council. The project aims to bring attention to environmental issues in battleground states.

The visit is part of a three-state trip, which includes New Mexico and Florida, to highlight the effects of President Bush's environmental policies, according to a spokeswoman.

In his Las Vegas visit, which begins at 2 p.m., Redford is expected to focus on Nevada-specific issues, including Yucca Mountain, toxic waste and clean water.

He was expected to appear with state Sen. Dina Titus, who has backed legislation limiting growth in the Las Vegas Valley.

Cooler weather to end by weekend

Temperatures Monday were 16 degrees below normal, the National Weather Service said.

The average temperature for this time of year is 92 degrees, according to weather service meteorologist Andy Gorelow. Monday was the coolest day of the year so far, with Pacific Northwest winds causing temperatures to reach only 76 degrees, he said.

But don't break out your fall jacket quite yet, Gorelow said.

"By the weekend, we should be back to normal in the low 90s," he said.
