Letter: War valor should be respected

Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004 | 9:14 a.m.

I take umbrage with the people who take the Purple Heart medal so lightly as to paint one on a Band-Aid and demonstrate with it on their body, as some people did at the Republican National Convention.

Their point was to indicate that Sen. John Kerry received his Purple Hearts because of scratches. The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth indicated the same thing.

Kerry's records, however, show otherwise. The men and women who have served their country and were awarded the Purple Heart have paid a price beyond comprehension.

The Republicans are saying we support our troops, but to the men and women who have been wounded in Iraq, a precedent has been set. In the future, if they should decide to run for public office, they will be asked whether they were entitled to their Purple Hearts.
