Columnist Barb Henderson: ‘Step Outside’ an invitation for novices to join the fun

Barb Henderson is an outdoors enthusiast, freelance writer and producer/host of outdoors radio television programming. Her column appears Friday in the Sun.

Attention, hunters, anglers and shooting sport enthusiasts: Saturday, Sept. 25, might be a great day for you to "Step Outside."

That day has been designated the 33rd National Hunting and Fishing Day, a nationwide celebration and a successful program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

"There are 48 million men and women who would accept an invitation to try target shooting and other outdoor activities. NHF Day is the perfect opportunity to extend that invitation to a friend or family member," said Cynthia Dalena, national coordinator of Step Outside.

Step Outside is a program of the National Shooting Sports Foundation that encourages outdoors enthusiasts to introduce to their friends, family and other acquaintances to the fun and excitement of target shooting, archery, hunting or fishing.

"For example, there are a number of shooting ranges in Southern Nevada. If you've ever thought about giving shooting a try, visit www.wheretoshoot.org. Prospective hunters can visit www.wheretohunt.org. And everyone can get more ideas by visiting the Step Outside website at www.stepoutside.org," said Dalena. Besides introducing someone new to one of the shooting ranges, don't forget there are plenty of fishable waters in Nevada.

Remember, your new fishing partners will need to pick up a copy of the Nevada Department of Wildlife's fishing regulations and purchase a fishing license with all of the appropriate stamps. For information on hunting and fishing opportunities in Nevada click on the Nevada Department of Wildlife's website, www.ndow.org

The event will also provide a special day to say thank you to all of the hunters, anglers, shooting sports enthusiast and other sportsmen and sportswomen who have made a difference by volunteering for programs with wildlife conservation organizations throughout the year.

Congratulations to C. Douglas Nielson, a game warden with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, for being named the 2004 Nevada Marine Officer of the year by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.
