Editorial: It’s crafty politics in the best tradition

Freshman Las Vegas Councilwoman Janet Moncrief may not be down for the count after all. Yes, she's been indicted on charges of falsifying campaign finance reports. And yes, two groups of people in her Ward 1 are organizing recall campaigns against her.

But it may be time for her opponents to pay her some grudging respect. In the best of political tradition, a proposed redistricting map of her ward shows that outspoken opponents and rivals for her council seat have, well, gone poof!

If the redrawn map is approved, former Clark County School Board member Lois Tarkanian, who has been mentioned as a Moncrief replacement, will no longer live in the ward. Neither will other possible replacements, including Marilyn Moran, Steve and Vicki Quinn, and the former Ward 1 councilman, Michael McDonald.

It's an amazing trick, but one that comes naturally to those with true political aptitude.
