Volunteers sought for LV Wash planting

Volunteers are needed to help protect the Las Vegas Wash, the natural filter for water entering Lake Mead.

The Las Vegas Wash Coordination Committee is calling for 200 volunteers to plant shrubs, trees and other vegetation along the banks of the wash in an effort to protect the channel from erosion and enhance wildlife habitat. The group is planning a four-hour effort Oct. 2.

The wash and the foliage in and around it serves to filter groundwater, stormwater, urban runoff and treated wastewater leaving the urban area and entering the lake, which provides 90 percent of the valley's drinking water. Call 258-7117.
