The University of Nevada, Las Vegas department of marriage, family and community counseling is receiving national recognition from the largest association of addiction professionals in the country, a statement from UNLV said.
NAADAC, the association for addiction professionals, is scheduled to give the UNLV department its 2004 Organizational Achievement Award Oct. 6 during its annual conference in West Yellowstone, Mont.
It will be the first time the award is given to an academic department at a public university, the statement said.
"Their counseling programs display the excellence all of us in the counseling professions strive for. UNLV has set the standard," awards committee chairman Edward L. Olsen said in the statement.
UNLV's department of marriage, family and community counseling offers three undergraduate programs that focus on addiction studies, minors in addiction treatment and addiction prevention, and the only academic program in the nation to focus on compulsive gambling treatment. Also, beginning last spring, the department began offering a graduate certificate program in addiction studies.
