Public meetings planned on NLV rental proposal

Public meetings on North Las Vegas' proposed rental inspection program will be held Tuesday and a week later on Sept. 21, the city announced.

The meetings are intended to give rental property owners and the public the chance to comment on and discuss with city officials the proposed Proactive Rental Enforcement Program. The program would charge landlords $50 per rental unit annually and mandate at least annual inspections of every rental household.

The first public meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Silver Mesa Recreation, 4025 Allen Lane, North Las Vegas. The second meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 21, in Council Chambers at City Hall, 2200 Civic Center Drive, North Las Vegas.

The City Council generally supported the proposed program last month, asking the city staff to bring the program back for council action after the public meetings.

City Manager Gregory Rose, who proposed the program, said it would protect public safety by ensuring safe living conditions, encouraging reinvestment in properties and promoting redevelopment.

According to city documents, about 23,260 of 42,000 homes in the city are rentals.

Under the program, landlords would be given at least 14 days' notice of a coming inspection, then would be given no more than 90 days to fix any problems uncovered during an inspection.

New construction would be exempt from the program for two years, and exceptionally well-kept properties could be awarded a one-year exemption from the fee.
