Bowden relatives killed in truck crash

A grandson and former son-in-law of Florida State University coach Bobby Bowden were killed near Quincy, Fla., when their car was hit by a utility truck that was helping to restore power outages caused by Hurricane Frances.

John Allen Madden, 45, a former Seminoles lineman, and his 15-year-old son Bowden Madden, were killed instantly when the passenger side of their car hit the front of the truck, Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Robert Mills said.

It's Love of Money

With Smarty Jones, the expected attraction, retired, Love of Money went wire to wire to win the $750,000 Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park in Bensalem, Pa., beating Pollard's Vision by 8 1/2 lengths.

UNLV wins again

A 70-58 victory against Langara College at the Capilano College Sportsplex in North Vancouver, British Columbia, gave the UNLV men's team a 4-0 record on its Labor Day weekend exhibition tour.

Joel Antony scored 12 points to lead the Rebels. Justin Villepigue led the team with eight rebounds. Vlad Ruzic led all scorers with 18 points for Langara.

Maradona to Cuba

Argentine soccer legend Maradona received permission from a judge in Buenos Aires to return to Cuba to resume drug rehabilitation. He has been confined to a psychiatric hospital the past three months.

Finland in semifinals

Mikko Eloranta tipped a shot past Olaf Kolzig with 3:22 to play, lifting Finland to a 2-1 victory at Helsinki against Germany and into the World Cup semifinal round.

China scales back

The Chinese government said today that five new Olympic stadiums will be built for the 2008 games in Beijing, instead of the 10 originally planned, in a cost-cutting move.
