Columnist Barb Henderson: Outdoor World adventures only two months away

Barb Henderson is an outdoors enthusiast, freelance writer and producer/host of outdoors radio television programming. Her column appears Friday in the Sun.

Two months and counting.

Mark your calendars for Nov. 11. That is the date hunters, anglers, shooting sport and outdoor enthusiasts will begin shopping at a Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World right here in our neck of the woods.

Bass Pro Shops, headquartered in Springfield, Mo., has 24 stores in locations across the United States. The new Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World will be at the Silverton hotel-casino, 3333 Blue Diamond Road in Las Vegas.

The 165,000-square-foot outdoors store has a warm way of welcoming its customers to come inside with a unique structure that has the appearance of a rustic hunting and fishing lodge.

You might want to make plans to spend a few hours inside. Sportsmen and sportswomen of all ages will want to explore the shop that will include: a 40,000 -allon freshwater aquarium fed by a waterfall -- with more than 200 fish native to the West; a NASCAR department with memorabilia and clothing; a 32-foot climbing wall for those who want to test their rock-climbing skills; a 12,000-square-foot space full of fishing tackle equipment and a fly fishing shop; a marine and boat center with a full range of powerboats from Tracker Marine; a hunting department; an archery department with a bow repair shop and a four-station archery range to test that new bow or sharpen existing skills; a fine gun room featuring guns to view from the 1800s to the

present; items for camping, hiking, kayaking, outdoor cooking, bird watching and much more.

Even though upland game bird stamps are now required when hunting most upland game birds in Nevada, they are not needed when hunting dove. Bird hunters who will be taking to the field for this Saturday's opening of blue grouse, ruffed grouse and snowcock seasons are required to have upland game bird stamps. Stamps are $10 and may be purchased at sporting goods stores and NDOW offices. They must be signed and affixed to hunting licenses when hunting. Hunters under 12 are not required to have the stamps.
