Letter: Saddam made war necessary
Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004 | 8:52 a.m.
You know what would have been the best way to avoid the war in Iraq? If Saddam Hussein had allowed inspectors unfettered access to Iraq -- as required by the U.N. resolutions put in place at the end of the first Gulf War. If Saddam had met these requirements, we would not have gone to war.
His refusal to comply with U.N. resolutions cannot be blamed on either President Bush or the failure of intelligence. Come on, people, please remember that we had just suffered through 9/11. Then we have a dictator who is hostile to the U.S., and who has used chemical weapons to kill people and who is refusing to allow the U.N. to conduct sanctioned inspections.
Wouldn't any sane leader, given the same circumstances, do what by all indications was the right thing to do to protect against further attacks? Saddam picked the wrong time to test our president's resolve.
Saddam Hussein is solely to blame for the war in Iraq.
