Holiday closings

In 1894 Congress declared the first Monday in September as Labor Day to honor all wage earners. However, the celebration for the event has its origins in the 1840s, when the Knights of Labor held September parades in New York City. Canada also observes the holiday. Here's what's open and closed on Monday:

SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services will be operating as usual. Administrative offices will be closed.

GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.

UTILITIES: Closed: Sprint, Southwest Gas, Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Cox Communications cable television.

SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County School District public schools, Community College of Southern Nevada, University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, Henderson District, North Las Vegas District, Boulder City District.

MAIL: Closed, no deliveries by the U.S. Postal Service, United Parcel Service.

NEWSPAPER: Las Vegas Sun published jointly with Review-Journal and delivered in the morning. Sun offices closed.

TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Ride natural gas buses: Holiday schedule (two vehicles in operation instead of five). Citizen Area Transit: Buses on holiday/weekend schedule (fewer buses on fixed routes).

MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting 8 a.m. Friday, closing midnight Monday.

GARBAGE: Republic Services of Southern Nevada collection as usual.

FINANCIAL: Closed: Most banks, brokerage firms. (Note: Banks may open as long as all transactions are posted on Tuesday, the next regular business day. Check your local branch for its holiday schedule.)

PARKING: Free parking in metered spaces.
