Current heat not unusual

After Las Vegans sweated through a Sept. 1 with a daytime high temperature of 107 degrees, weather experts have an answer as to why it was so hot, National Weather Service meteorologist Charlie Schlott said.

"It's summertime," Schlott said. There are three more weeks to go before the calendar turns to autumn.

As it turns out, Wednesday's temperature didn't nudge the record of 113 degrees set in 1950, Schlott said.

The average daily high temperature for Sept. 1 is 99 degrees, so Southern Nevada was 8 degrees above normal on Wednesday, Schlott said.

For the past five days the Las Vegas Valley and most of the Southwest has baked under a dome of hot, still air known as a high pressure ridge.

For those who dream of fall weather, valley residents will get a taste of it starting today, Schlott said.

Breezes this morning will turn into winds with gusts to 35 mph on tap through Friday.
