Comments sought on wilderness proposal

The Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service are preparing a wilderness management plan and assessing the environment of the Muddy Mountains wilderness area.

The BLM and the Park Service share management duties of the area, that stretches from the Valley of Fire to Callville Bay at Lake Mead.

Congress designated the area wilderness through the Clark County Conservation of Public Lands and Natural Resources Act of 2002.

A 30-day public scoping process begins Thursday, Park Service spokeswoman Roxanne Dey said.

A public meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the BLM office located at 4701 N. Torrey Pines Drive.

After a short introduction about the area, an informal open house is scheduled. The meeting is expected to last two hours.

Comments may also be sent by mail or e-mail and accepted through Oct. 4.

Comments should be addressed to: James Sippel, Bureau of Land Management, 4701 N. Torrey Pines Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89130-2301 or [email protected].

The draft plan is expected to be complete by summer of 2005 and available for a 45-day public comment period.
