Two more cases of West Nile hit

Two new cases of West Nile virus were reported in Clark County over the past week, the Clark County Health District said today, bringing the total number of people here sickened by the mosquito-borne disease to 23.

Across Nevada 43 people have now become ill from West Nile, which can cause permanent damage or death, according to reports from the state Health Division and the Washoe County Health Department. No one has died in Nevada, which has the country's seventh highest number of cases.

"What the numbers continue to show is that there is West Nile virus activity in our area," Health District spokesman David Tonelli said today. "We're not out of the woods yet this year, so it's still important that people be mindful of mosquito bites."

Officials urge people to wear insect repellent and protective clothing if they go outside at dawn or dusk. The mosquito season is projected to end around Halloween.

Errors led to Predator crash

Errors by an instructor and a student pilot caused an MQ-1L Predator remotely piloted aircraft to crash during a training mission at Indian Springs Auxiliary Field on June 14, according to an Air Force report.

The instructor pilot allowed the student to continue with a poor landing approach causing the plane to crash, the report states.

The Air Force uses RQ-1 and MQ-1 Predators, with the RQ models used for reconnaissance and the MQ models used as weapons platforms for Hellfire missiles.

The aircraft cost about $3.6 million apiece, depending upon what equipment is installed in the plane. The MQ-1 that crashed was valued at about $4.2 million, Air Force officials said.
