Short film festival
UNLV's Short Film Archive will host the next screening of festival award-winning short films at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Classroom Building Complex room A-106 on the UNLV campus. Admission is free. 895-3547.
Lecture
Dr. Nicolas Magriel, a musician and ethnomusicologist, will present "Growing Up With Music in North India: Mysteries of the Sarangi," a performance/ lecture, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Horn Little Theatre on the Community College of Southern Nevada's Cheyenne campus. Admission is free. 898-7671.
Panel discussion
A free panel discussion on the scuptures of Frederick Hart will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. 360-8000.
Sock hop
A sock hop for seniors ages 50 and older will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Dula Gymnasium, 441 E. Bonanza Road. Admission is $3. 229-6307.
'Pixote'
The movie "Pixote: A Lei Do Mais Fraco," will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. Admission is $3, and the movie is rated R for graphic violence, nudity, drug use and language. 455-7340.
Talent competition
The City of Las Vegas will host a "Senior Idol" talent competition at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road. Admission is $2 in advance, $5 at the door. 229-6454.
Tai chi classes
Free tai chi classes will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays at the District at Green Valley Ranch. 458-8855.
Troop support
The City of Las Vegas invites the community to "make a hand of support" for troops overseas from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Bring in mementos and pictures to share. Active and retired military are welcome. Admission is free, and refreshments will be provided. 229-1607.
First Friday
The Las Vegas Arts District will host First Friday, an arts fair, from 6 to 10 p.m. today in downtown Las Vegas. For maps, go to www.firstfriday-lasvegas.org. 384-0092.
