New power plant dedicated

Southern Nevada Water Authority General Manager Pat Mulroy, Pinnacle West Capital Corp. Chairman and Chief Executive Bill Post, Silverhawk plant manager Bill Simko and Gov. Kenny Guinn, from left, toured the new Silverhawk power plant today.

The Silverhawk Power Station, a 570-megawatt power plant at the Apex Industrial Park 20 miles north of Las Vegas, was dedicated this morning. The plant was built by GenWest LLC, a subsidiary of Phoenix-based Pinnacle West Energy, which will operate Silverhawk.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority owns a 25 percent share of the $400 million plant. The water authority struck a deal with Nevada Power Co. to sell its peak power -- from noon to 8 p.m. -- to the Las Vegas electric company between June 15 and Sept. 15.

In exchange Nevada Power will provide backup power and off-peak power to the water authority. The SNWA uses electricity to pump water. Silverhawk is the third power plant to go online in Clark County in the past year.
