Columnist Muriel Stevens: Boutique celebrates 10-spot

On a recent Sunday morning, walking with a friend from the parking garage at Treasure Island to Canter's Deli, we discovered the $10 Boutique.

Without any fanfare, The $10 store opened April 26. I would have missed it if I had not been with a friend who knew that the parking garage was the shortest walk to Canter's. A quick perusal of The $10 Boutique was all the encouragement we needed to make our way back to this intriguing store after brunch.

In Las Vegas there are $10 Boutiques at MGM Grand, Treasure Island and New York-New York.

Among the many kinds of wares found here are men's and women's straw hats, ties, belts, sunglasses, a good variety of handbags (from casual totes to attractive evening bags), pillow shams and jewelry, including necklaces, earrings and matching sets.

An extraordinary selection of men's and women's watches fills rack after rack. Some are such convincing pretenders that I wasn't surprised to later learn from Carol Morabito, vice president of retail at TI, that watches are the parent company's main classification. All of the sales tags are imprinted with the company name, Bijoux Terner, and little else except the manufacturing countries.

There are dozens of items small enough to tuck into a handbag or a pocket -- measuring tapes, picture frames and such -- that are OK, but these trinkets don't appear to be as much of a value as the watches and other items.

The packable, foldable straw hats are well made and attractive. One male shopper was ecstatic over the hat choices and bought almost the entire batch.

Check out the merchandise before buying. The TI store is a good size. There's so much tucked away on the shelves and mixed in with similar inventory that shoppers should take the time to view everything, especially the selection of watches. I went around three times and found something new each time.

Fashion wunderkind Zac Pozen at Fashion Show: On Sunday, Fashion Show's Rouse Company will join with Neiman Marcus for an exclusive showing of the Zac Posen 2004 Fall/Winter Collection. Posen, a 23-year-old-fashion wizard whose designs are the choice of such stunning young fashionistas as Claire Danes, China Chow, Lauren Bush and Natalie Portman, will make a personal appearance at the show. The by-invitation-only event will include national retail and fashion executives attending the International Council of Shopping Centers (CSC) Convention in Las Vegas.

Monday, Posen will make a visit to NM's couture salon from noon to 1 p.m. Posen's Fall/Winter Collection will be on display throughout the day. Special orders will be available for the complete line.

Oscar de la Renta fashions: Fashion legend Oscar de la Renta, whose designs will highlight the Nathan Adelson Hospice fashion show and lunch at the Four Seasons on May 26, will hie to Neiman Marcus in the Fashion Show immediately after. He'll depart Las Vegas in the late afternoon. De la Renta's 2004 Collection will be in NM's couture salon May 27 to May 28 for special orders.
