Ex-teacher’s aide’s probation threatened by contact with teen
Friday, June 25, 2004 | 9:34 a.m.
The attorney representing a former teacher's aide accused of violating the terms of her probation by having contact with the special education student she had sex with when he was 16 years old said "there is another side to the story."
Carolyn Anne Wilson, 42, was sentenced to probation in 2002 by District Judge Donald Mosley under the condition she have no contact with the student.
The district attorney's office learned Wilson violated the terms of her probation after the woman told her probation officer she had let the teen borrow her car, called him to ask for help in fixing a flat tire and also that he had repeatedly called her.
Mosley has scheduled a revocation of parole hearing for July 6. Wilson faces up to 32 years in prison if her probation is revoked.
Deputy Public Defender Lynn Avants said after speaking with Wilson he doesn't feel the situation is "as bad as it could be."
"Although there was contact between Ms. Wilson and the student, who is now 19 years old, it was very minimal contact," Avants said. "There is another side to this story and Judge Mosley will hear it on July 6."
Avants stressed there are currently no allegations of any sexual contact between Wilson and the teen.
Wilson's situation comes on the heels of three recent arrests of Clark County School District employees charged with sexual crimes against students.
Nephye Acevedo-Villatoro, 26, a custodian at Coronado High School, was arrested for allegedly exposing himself to a 13-year-old girl after unsuccessfully trying to lure her to his car.
Marlene Hazel, 32, a teacher's assistant at Gordon McCaw Elementary School, was arrested on charges of statutory sexual seduction in a case involving a 14-year-old boy neighbor. Hazel is accused of having sex with the boy while his parents were out of town.
Substitute teacher Cornelius Ausborne, 29, was arrested on two counts of sexual assault of a minor 14 or under, sexual misconduct with a student and related offenses.
Nineteen School District employees have been arrested in the past three years and charged with sex-related offenses ranging from possession of child pornography to molestation and rape.
