Defect settlement reached

Del Webb Communities Inc. has reached a multimillion dollar settlement for all existing and potential future claims for thermal galvanic corrosion -- when underground copper pipes react with soil and corrode, causing the pipe to degrade and potentially leak -- on all homes built between mid-1991 through 1995 at its Sun City Summerlin community.

The $21.5 million settlement will primarily be covered by insurance carriers for Del Webb, its plumbing contractors and related material suppliers.

Litigation has gone on for almost two years, when four Sun City Summerlin homeowners filed a class action suit against Del Webb.

The homeowners' attorney Bruce Mayfield credited Del Webb for "stepping up and being accountable" and said the funds will ensure homes will be repaired if pipe corrosion occurs in the future.
