EOB official appeals firing

Fred O'Hare, a child care specialist for the Economic Opportunity Board's child care assistance program, was fired by the nonprofit organization and appealed his firing last week.

O'Hare was subsidy manager of the whole program -- the EOB's largest -- until being fired once before last fall. He appealed that firing as well based on a lack of due process and the EOB hired him back in February, demoting him in the process to his current position.

The EOB's child care program receives at least $20 million in state and federal funds to help poor families throughout the Las Vegas Valley. For four years O'Hare oversaw a staff of 30 that dealt with the parents participating in the program.

The program currently has an acting subsidy manager, he said. O'Hare seeks reinstatement through the human resources department, although the troubled nonprofit organization -- the subject of three federal inquiries in recent months -- also has a temporary human resources manager.
