Letter: War was needed to validate U.N.’s global authority

In a speech on May 24 President Bush said:
I think the president and his subordinates have made their intent transparently clear: The impending war on, or occupation of, Iraq is intended to carry out the Security Council's mandates, not to protect our nation or to punish those responsible for the Sept. 11 attack. The war would uphold the U.N.'s supposed authority and vindicate its role as a de facto world government.
