Zany rules part of race

Tuesday, June 15, 2004 | 9:17 a.m.

The unusual challenge that is the Insight Race Across America is reflected in a couple of the unusual rules for competitors in the race.

Rule 850.2 states: "Crew or riders may not strip and dance naked for any reason outside of the support vehicle without appropriate coverages or curtain."

And there's the one about the check-in procedure that orders each team's crew chief to bring a small bag of M&M candy to the riders' meeting so the competitors can receive their free RAAM water bottles. That one is in there, race organizers say, to ensure that entrants read the rules.

The race begins in San Diego on Sunday and the lead riders hope to reach Atlantic City a little more than a week later. The closest the route brings the riders to Las Vegas is through Prescott, Ariz.
