Scooter rider killed by car

An 80-year-old Las Vegas resident died after being run over by a 2001 Ford Supercab about 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Metro Police said.

Michael Gallone was riding a three-wheel scooter and lost control of it as it traveled eastbound on the wrong side of a private road on Rampart Drive just north of Del Webb Avenue.

Gallone was thrown into the path of the Ford, driven by Maria Krebs, 40, of Las Vegas, who was driving in the right hand turn lane on Rampart.

Gallone was taken to Mountain View Hospital, where he died of injuries from the accident.

Shooter still sought

North Las Vegas Police were still searching for a man who shot and killed 19-year-old Christopher Wayne Lyons in the 2500 block of Civic Center Drive, near East Carey Avenue, about 1 a.m. on Friday.

Witnesses told police that Lyons was shot while walking along Civic Center Drive, Officer Tim Bedwell, spokesman for the department, said.

Lyons tried to run away after the shooting, but collapsed, Bedwell said.

Police are looking for a black man about 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. He jumped into the passenger side of a silver 1983 or 1984 Cadillac, which fled west on Nelson Avenue. Police don't have a description of the driver, Bedwell said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Boy hurt on skateboard dies

A Las Vegas teen who was in critical condition after falling off a motorized skateboard two weeks ago, was taken off life support and died Sunday.

A spokeswoman at University Medical Center said 14-year-old Dusty Steen died early Sunday morning at the hospital.

Steen was riding the motorized skateboard June 2 down Alexander Road near Tee Pee Lane when he fell off.

Body found after fall from helicopter

Authorities on Friday found the body of a man who plunged to his death from a sightseeing helicopter at Grand Canyon National Park in an apparent suicide.

The company operating the helicopter said the passenger removed his seat belt during the flight Thursday, opened a door and jumped.

Park officials offered few details on what led up to the man's death, saying only that he allegedly opened the door and exited the helicopter.

"Right now they are calling it an apparent suicide, but it's still under investigation," park spokeswoman Leah McGinnis said.

The Federal Aviation Administration will no longer participate in the investigation because the Papillon Airways pilot tried to restrain the man, FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said.

"The pilot didn't do anything wrong," Fergus said. "They didn't know he was going to commit suicide."

Alzheimer's victim found

A 74-year-old Las Vegas man suffering from Alzheimer's who walked away from the care center where he was staying on Friday was found a day later.

Alex Logan was in good condition at Sunrise Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Cheryl Smith said. Metro Police brought him to the hospital on Saturday, she said.

Perfect ACT score recorded

Thomas Kaiser, a senior at Palo Verde High School, will be honored Tuesday for getting a perfect score on the ACT college-entrance test.

Gov. Kenny Guinn will bestow the honors on Kaiser, the son of Kathleen and James Kaiser.

Kaiser was one of only 41 students nationwide who had a 36, the highest possible composite score on the October 2003 national test.

About 1,300 Nevada students and 425,000 nationally completed the test.
