CCSN dance festival set Saturday, Sunday

Community College of Southern Nevada, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave., will hold its sixth annual Dance in the Desert Festival at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at the campus' Nicholas J. Horn Theatre.

The festival will emphasize contemporary concert works representing a variety of approaches from Modern and Post-Modern Dance to experiments with Classical Ballet technique.

A reception following each performance will allow the audience to mingle with the dancers, enjoy light refreshments, listen to chamber music and view the visual are of local artists displayed in the gallery.

Participants include: Southern Utah University Dance Company; Metropolitan Ballet and Nannette Brodie Dance Theatre; Arizona's Desert Dance Theatre; "Joe," a performance art piece by Louis Kavouras and Michael Lugering; CCSN's Concert Dance Company and Dance Ensemble; Ballet Mink Colbert; Habaybi Dance Ensemble; Susan Abbott-Doskocil's rhythm tap stylings; and Kelley Roth and Dancers.

Admission is $10 for one show, $18 for two shows, and $24 for three shows; for seniors and students, $8 for one show, $14 for two shows, and $18 for three shows; for groups of 20 or more, tickets will be $6 each; for senior/student groups of 20 or more, $5 each.

Court candidates to answer questions

Charleston Neighborhood Preservation will host a question and answer session for Nevada Supreme Court candidates from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the West Sahara Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Candidates are Don Ashworth, Jim Hardesty, Kevin Mirch and Cynthia Steel.

Admission is free. Bring written questions for one or all of the candidates to answer.

Back to school campaigns planned

The Back to School Fair Community Walk Campaign will be held from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, starting from the parking lot of Hayden Pointe, 2125 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Volunteers will walk the inner city of North Las Vegas with the goal of disseminating nearly 10,000 bilingual fliers.

Also the Stuff-A-Bus and Stuff-A-Pack Party Campaigns will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Office Depot, 3247 S. Maryland Parkway. Hundreds of donated backpacks will be stuffed with school supply donations from various community entities.

Animal welfare fund-raiser on tap

Petco will hold its annual Round Up/Spay Today fund-raiser now through Aug. 15 to raise money for local animal welfare organizations that offer spay/neuter programs or education.

For the second year, 10 percent of all funds raised will be donated to SPAY/USA, the largest spay/neuter advocacy and referral program in the world.
