Las Vegans can take steps to beat the heat

Staying cool in the Las Vegas heat doesn't come cheap.

The average family in America spends $1,400 a year on energy bills, with nearly half going to heating and cooling alone, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

To combat those high costs, there are simple steps residents can take each summer to save money and energy, the agency said.

It is also common to find gaps between duct joints in a home, the EPA added. Residents should have their ducts inspected, sealed and insulated. By sealing these areas, residents can save up to 10 percent on energy bills each year.
