UNLV's Brimmer put on Nagurski list
UNLV senior safety Jamaal Brimmer, named a preseason first team All-American by Athlon's college football magazine last month, was one of 60 players named Tuesday to the 2004 watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation's top defensive college football player.
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Durango High School product has won back-to-back Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards as selected by conference media. He led the MWC with six interceptions in 2003 and was one of 12 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation's top defensive back.
The Bronco Nagurski Award is released by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and the Football Writers Association of America. It honors former University of Minnesota and Chicago Bears Hall of Famer Bronco Nagurski. Five finalists for the honor will be named in November with the winner being named at a banquet on Dec. 6 in Charlotte, N.C.
LV's Gifford honored
Las Vegas High graduate Christopher Gifford has been named the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award winner for Nevada.
Gifford, who will wrestle for Fresno State in the fall, won three state titles and compiled a career mark of 148-12 for the Wildcats. He also played football at LV High, where he was a four-time Science Olympiad state champion.
Delgado makes return
Blue Jays slugger Carlos Delgado was activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing 33 games because of a strained rib cage.
Delgado batted fourth in Toronto's lineup and doubled in his first at-bat in a 7-6 win over Seattle.
GM gets death threats
Orlando Magic general manager John Weisbrod reportedly received written death threats at his home about trading two-time NBA scoring champion Tracy McGrady.
Florida Today reported today that Weisbrod received two such threats since mid-June, and was forced to check into a hotel under an alias for two nights last week.
Peru ties Bolivia
Claudio Pizarro and Roberto Palacios each scored second-half goals, and Peru came back from two goals down to tie Bolivia 2-2 in Copa America.
Earlier, Tressor Moreno scored on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute for defending champion Colombia in a 1-0 win over Venezuela.
