Mayor's meeting to help charities
Local food charities will benefit from a networking event with Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Icehouse Lounge, 601 Main St.
Admission is $20 in advance or $30 at the door or bring $30 worth of nonperishable food items.
Donations will benefit First Friday/Whirlygig Inc., Aid for Aids of Nevada and Jewish Family Services. Call 591-8008.
Chabad to offer lecture series
"From Your Mouth to G-d's Ears: The Secret Power of Prayer," an eight-week lecture series, will be presented by Chabad of Southern Nevada and Chabad of Green Valley at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at 1261 S. Arville Street and Wednesdays at 10870 S. Eastern Ave., Suite 104, beginning Tuesday. The fee for the series is $79. Call 617-0770.
School seeking volunteer readers
Hollingsworth Elementary School is looking for volunteers to help it with a nationwide Reading Is Fundamental contest Feb. 2-13.
Adults are being sought to read with students between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on school days those two weeks. Readers may bring their own book or the school will select an age-appropriate story.
The school receives points for each community member who comes to the school to read. Winning schools receive money for their library.
The Reading Is Fundamental Community Reading Challenge promotes lifelong readers by inviting members of the community to visit the school, 1776 E. Ogden Ave.
