Columnist Muriel Stevens: Products’ real test is at home

Reading about the new General Electric products introduced at the 2004 International Builders Show, which wraps up Thursday at the Las Vegas Convention Center, was a reminder of all the trade shows I've attended and all the new products I've seen over the years.

Watching the products evolve is as good as a course in consumer marketing. No matter how tempting, I no longer rush to buy the first version of any product. In spite of all the research that's done and all the testing by the experts, the real test is in the home.

It's common in upscale kitchens to have refrigerated drawers and freezers, appliances that talk and digital timers. But these items were introduced a long time ago. It just took awhile to perfect them. The GE Monogram series offers six under-the-counter refrigerated modules designed to fit a standard 24-inch cutout for a customized look without a customized price. Expect to see more of these customized effects in the near future.

SkinKlinic opens at Mandalay Place: SkinKlinic, devoted to total skin care, has opened at Mandalay Place. Founder Kathy Dwyer knows about skin care and treatments. During her tenure as president of Revlon Consumer Products USA, Dwyer created long-lasting lip color and age-defying makeup. SkinKlinic says that treatments, not products alone, make all the difference in the performance of skin.

The treatments available at SkinKlinic's flagship NYC location are also available at Mandalay Place, including glycolic and beta treatments, microdermabrasion, refinity, collagen stimulation and replacement, and Botox therapy and spot removal.

"We are very excited to be bringing SkinKlinic to Las Vegas. There are 110 million people between the ages of 36 to 64 years in the U.S. and less than 10 percent have access to actual treatments in their hometowns. Our Mandalay Bay location will enable us to reach a diverse group of clients and out-of-town visitors," said Dwyer.

SkinKlinic hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and Monday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Call 832-3300.

Exclusive gifts at RedEnvelope: Among the many items exclusive to RedEnvelope are two for children that are super -- a photo growth chart ($30) that captures, inch-by-inch, the little one's milestones. The colorful wall hanging includes three fabric frames for photographs. An enchanting ABC keepsake quilt ($70) was inspired by old-fashioned fabric and applique books from the 1930s and '40s. It can be personalized for an additional $10. For a RedEnvelope catalog or to place an order visit www.redenvelope.com or call (877) 733-3683.

Beware those gift card limits: Don't forget to read the fine print on all gift cards. A Visa gift card I received from my family says, "An administrative fee of $2.50 per month will be deducted from your balance beginning with the seventh month from the month of card purchase." It continues: "This gift card expires on the date listed on the front of the card, except where prohibited by law." So, after Feb. '05 if there's a balance, they get to keep it!
